KWAZULU-NATAL DISCOVERY - FROM DURBAN

A wonderful journey through KwaZulu-Natal taking in the historic battlefields, traditional Zulu culture and the beautiful Drakensburg Mountains.

Day 1 - to Shakaland (160 km)
Head north from Durban into the heart of Zululand, through attractive countryside and fields of gently waving sugar cane. At Shakaland Cultural Village there is a chance to learn about the Zulu way of life. You will meet a 'sangoma' or medicine man and learn about spear throwing and Zulu fighting formations before enjoying a colourful display of dancing and a traditional feast. Overnight at Protea Hotel Shakaland.

Day 2 - to the Battlefields (240 km)
Head inland through the heart of KwaZulu-Natal to the Battlefields, where many lives were lost in the Anglo Zulu and Anglo Boer conflicts. Your accommodation overlooks the plains of Isandlwana where the beauty of the region now belies its brutal past. Overnight at Isandlwana Lodge.

Day 3 - to the Drakensberg for 2 nights (270 km)
This morning leave your car behind as a specialist guide takes you on a tour of the Battlefields, explaining the history of the region and bringing the famous stories to life. Later continue on for 2 nights in the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains, South Africa’s highest and a world heritage site. There are free guided walks from your Lodge or self guided trails to the waterfalls or ancient rock paintings in the area. Or indulge in some tennis, fishing or even horse riding provided. Delicious evening meals are included. Overnight at Montusi Mountain Lodge.

Day 5 - to Durban or Johannesburg (350 km)
Explore a little more of the Drakensberg before heading back to Durban and the coast. Alternatively, cross the mountains for the journey north to Johannesburg. You can drop your car at either destination.
