Bergs & Battlefields

Drankensberg | Durban

A fascinating journey through KwaZulu-Natal taking in the historic battlefields, traditional Zulu villages and the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains.

Day 1 - Mkuze  (335km)
Head north from Durban into the heart of Zululand towards your overnight say near Mkuze (overnight at Ghost Mountain Inn). Time permitting take a wildlife cruise on Lake Jozini  in search of crocodiles and some of the 350 recorded bird species.

Overnight Ghost Mountain

Day 2 - Battlefields (250km)
The next day you might like to take an early morning game drive in Hluhluwe National Park, South Africa's oldest nature reserve and the birthplace of rhino conservation. Afterwards head off to the Battlefields for a two-night stay in the town of Dundee, a great base from which to visit the historic battlefields.

Overnight Royal Country Inn

Day 3 - Battlefields
Dedicate today to exploring the battlefields and perhaps join an expertly guided tour of the 1879 Anglo Zulu War battle of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift where British soldiers, outnumbered 35 to 1, valiantly fought off 4000 Zulus. Perhaps complete your visit with some time spent at the battlefield site of Fugitive's Drift.

Overnight Royal Country Inn

Day 4 - Drakensberg for 2 nights  (250km)
After breakfast take a scenic drive to the beautiful Drakensberg Mountains where you will have plenty of time to explore this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the mighty Giant's Castle where you can enjoy a guided walk to the main caves where ancient San rock art paintings have stood the test of time.

Overnight Champagne Castle

Day 5 - Drakensberg
On your second day perhaps go horse riding, hike the impressive, and aptly named, Amphitheatre and take on the mighty Champagne Castle, which at 3377m is one of the highest peaks of the Drakensberg Mountain range or simply relax and soak up the breath-taking countryside and mountain views.

Overnight Champagne Castle

Complete your journey by either heading back to the cosmopolitan city of Durban where you could extend your stay with a few days on the coast, or alternatively journey north to Johannesburg, South Africa's biggest city, where you can drop your car at the airport before continuing your journey.
