Amazulu Lodge - St Lucia

A small and personal guest house hotel in the centre of St Lucia and close to the entrance to the Wetlands National Park and beaches. The thatched African style rooms are set around a well kept garden and pool. With Hluhluwe National Park, the Wetlands and estuary nearby, there’s plenty to do in the area, or simply laze beside the Indian Ocean on St Lucia’s perfect beach.

Elephant Lake Hotel - St Lucia

This friendly local hotel is set amongst shops and restaurants of St Lucia, with delightful gardens that run down to the river - great for relaxing by the outdoor pool, but watch out for the hippos at night! Elephant Lake is great for a few days by the beach and for exploring the Hluhluwe or St Lucia Wetlands National Parks nearby. Both can be accessed in your own car or safaris, estuary cruises and even horse rides can all be booked at the reception.

The bright and welcoming hotel rooms have furnished balconies overlooking the St Lucia Estuary. All are air conditioned with satellite TV and tea and coffee making facilities.

Rocktail Beach Camp - Elephant Coast

Located on the Elephant Coast in the far Northeast corner of Kwazulu-Natal province, Rocktail Bay Beach Camp is surrounded by protected wilderness - where the world heritage site of St Lucia Wetlands Park meets the warm azure waters of the Maputaland Marine reserve. This is an area of remote unspoilt beaches, world class diving and abundant wildlife. 

A leisurely 15 minute stroll from the beach, the camp is tucked away amongst coastal forest and sand dunes. There is a dining room, swimming pool, bar and lounge with a wrap-around verandah - perfect for those evening sundowners! On land experience prolific bird life, hippos and antelope whilst in the sea you will find huge shoals of fish, dolphin and whales. In season (Oct-Mar) the area also plays host to turtles who come ashore to lay their eggs.

Accommodation
The part tented rooms have ceiling fans, ensuite facilities including an ‘open feel’ indoor shower and safe. Mosquito coils and repellent are also provided.

Dining room, lounge, swimming pool, tour desk. For a supplement of £35 per night a selection of activities can be pre booked which include guided beach and forest walks, snorkelling and a lake excursion.
 

Getting to Rocktail Beach Camp

The most straightforward and economical way to reach the camp is with your own self drive vehicle and the driving distances are as follows;

•    7 ½  hrs from Johannesburg
•    5 hrs from Durban
•    3 ½  hrs from Richards Bay Airport

Visitors in non 4wd vehicles can park at Coastal Cashews, a secure car park and pick up point. From here there are regular transfers for the 45 minute journey to Rocktail Beach Camp. The last transfer of is at 16.00. All timings are approximate

Zululand Tree Lodge - Hluhluwe

Set in a cool fever tree forest, the Tree Lodge is a truly special retreat where you stay in luxurious stilted chalets. Its proximity to Ubizane Wildlife Reserve means that you can easily take part in game drives in the early morning or late afternoon and spend the rest of your day enjoying the quiet lounge, observation deck and sunny pool area. There are also walking safaris in the company of a ranger so you can really get up close to Africa’s wildlife.

Accommodation – The charming chalets are built on stilts among the trees and all have the most wonderful views from their private balconies. They also have fridge, ceiling fan and insect nets.

Sandford Country Hotel - Battlefields

This delightful hotel is perfectly located for visiting the battlefields sites at Spionkop and the town of Ladysmith with its interesting museum. Set in beautiful countryside approximately 2 ½ hours drive from Durban. The beautiful Drakensberg mountains are also within easy reach where you can hike, fish or simply enjoy the crisp clean air and mountain scenery. The pretty gardens are a real highlight of a stay here with immaculate lawns and rose gardens it makes the perfect place to relax and unwind.

Accommodation
The Traditional rooms are furnished in charming cottage style with picturesque garden and dam views. All have  thatched roofs to ensure that the rooms are cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The Executive rooms are more contemporary and have bathrooms with separate bath and shower, cable television and private patios with stunning views of the berg. The charming lodge sits right at the edge of the Isandlwana Plain and enjoys views right over the battlefields. The beautiful setting is in complete contrast to the bloody encounters which took place in Zululand a little over 100 years ago.

This fascinating history is brought to life by the lodge’s resident historian. After touring the battlefields relax and enjoy your surroundings and soak up the atmosphere.

Cathedral Peak - Drakensberg

A first class and friendly resort set in the towering Drakensburg Mountains, half way between Durban and Johannesburg and close to the Lesotho border.

There are 15 or more self guided trails from the lodge - from a half hour stroll to a one day climb to the Peak - and a host of other activities, including horse riding, golf and even quad bikes. Or simply relax and enjoy the view from your sunbed by the pool in Cathedral Peak’s landscaped gardens.
