Off the east coast of Tanzania, the former Portuguese colony of Zanzibar is famed for its magnificent white sand beaches. The island is a melting pot of Arab, African and Persian cultures from its history as a great Indian Ocean trading post at the centre of the world’s spice trade. The capital, Stone Town, is a maze of winding alleys, bustling bazaars and grand colonial buildings and is now a Unesco World Heritage site.
The beachfront Karafuu Hotel is set on Zanzibar’s beautiful east coast, around 40 minutes from Stone Town. The hotel offers a great range of facilities as well as attractive thatched guest rooms scattered around the landscaped gardens.
