SOUTHERN WANDERER - 7 DAY SELF DRIVE FROM WINDHOEK

Explore Namibia's beautiful south, taking in Fish River Canyon, historic sites from colonial times, the Namib Naukluft Park and the mighty dunes of Sosusvlei.

Day 1 – to the Kalahari Desert (320 km)
Head south from Windhoek towards the vast plains of the Western Kalahari. Along the way pass by the settlement of Rehoboth and its Baster Community who are descendent of the first settlers to the area. Overnight at Intu Africa Tented Camp.

Day 2 – to Fish River Canyon (350 km)
Continue through the Karas Region via the small towns of Mariental and Keetmanshoop. This is one of the oldest towns in Namibia and capital of the south. Travel on to Fish River Canyon and its interesting flora. Overnight Canon Lodge.

Day 3 – to Lüderitz (430 km)
This morning tour the canyon which is the third largest in the world. The impressive geological landscape dates back many millions of years and not to be missed. Later travel to the small town of Aus and on to Lüderitz. You may spot wild horses along the way. Overnight The Nest Hotel.

Day 4 – to Namib Naukluft National Park (125 km)
Leaving Lüderitz travel back to the town of Aus. Its rich history and diverse flora and fauna are not to be missed. There are various guided tours and an excellent information centre which will really help you understand the area. Overnight Klein Aus Desert Horse Inn.

Day 5 – to Sossusvlei for 2 nights (450 km)
During your stay in the impressive Namib Naukluft Park, don’t miss a visit to Duwisib Castle, built in 1907. It is reminiscent of German castles and much of the furniture was imported from Europe.

A visit to the path of the Tschaub River and the famed dunes of Sosusvlei is a must, it’s claimed that this is the most stunning landscape in the country so it should give you plenty of photo opportunities. Overnight at The Desert Homestead.

Day 7 – to Windhoek (350 km)
Head back to Windhoek today via the little town of Usakos, once an important supply station for the Windhoek to coast railway. Return your car to the airport or extend yor stay in the capital city.
